What to do in case of windshield damage

As soon as windshield damage occurs, it should be protected from dirt and further contamination. If you are not able to have it repaired immediately, keep dirt away from the damaged area using a piece of clear packing tape.
Don’t wait too long or allow the crack to spread, because it may no longer be repairable afterwards. Windshield repair can be performed in all weather conditions (rain, snow, wind, etc.).
The Black Glass team has extensive experience in windshield repair. Minor windshield damage (crack, star break, bullseye, chip) can often be repaired while restoring the strength and clarity of the glass.
Why auto glass repair matters
If it is not repaired, the damage on the glass spreads over time so that at some point repair is no longer possible. This process accelerates especially during winter when heating is used, so small damage can grow into a crack. The damaged glass then has to be replaced with a new one. The sooner you react, the greater the chances of saving the glass.
Damaged auto glass is not safe because it can break, which most often happens while driving. After a professionally done repair, the glass is restored to its original condition, which means greater safety for the driver and passengers.
Auto glass repair is a faster and significantly more affordable process than installing a new windshield.

Conditions for auto glass repair

Auto glass damage can be repaired in the following cases:
- Front windshield: Repair is done only for damage on the front windshield. For damage on the rear or side glass, repair is not possible and that glass must be replaced.
- First repair: The same damage can be repaired only once.
- Damage up to 3cm: Auto glass repair is done for damage whose diameter is smaller than 3cm. For larger damage we do not recommend repair.
- Out of the field of view: If the damage is in the driver's field of view, i.e. directly in front of the steering wheel, we recommend repair only for damage whose diameter is up to 1cm.
- Off the glass edge: Repair is done for damage that is not on the edge of the windshield. For damage located on the very edge of the glass, repair is not recommended.
The auto glass repair process

For experienced technicians, repair is a simple process that consists of the following steps:
- Cleaning the glass to remove all dirt.
- Filling the glass with a special auto glass resin.
- Curing the glass with a UV lamp to restore its strength.
- Polishing the glass to achieve good optical clarity.
Repairing damaged auto glass at the Black Glass service takes on average 30 minutes, and at most 1h for exceptionally complex damage. The vehicle is safe to drive immediately after the repair.
Frequently asked questions about auto glass repair
Stones on the road, as well as the gritting of streets with grit in winter, are the most common causes of damage to the front windshield. Auto glass cracking often occurs from mechanical damage, caused by the impact or fall of heavier objects onto the glass, or in the case of traffic accidents.
Auto glass repair is done in the case of damage to the front windshield, while rear and side windows most often have to be replaced.
Repair is done for damage whose diameter is smaller than 3 cm. If the damage is located in the driver’s field of view, that is, directly in front of the steering wheel, we recommend repair only for damage whose diameter is up to 1 cm. It is best to have the glass examined by trained technicians who, immediately after the inspection, will tell you
Different types of damage to auto glass (circle, half-moon, line, star, dot) carry a different degree of risk of the glass cracking and require the use of different repair techniques. Here the installer’s experience is very important, especially if the damage is of a combined type. For example, round damage does not carry as great a risk as star-shaped damage (damage with several legs), where it is very important to fill each leg properly, so that the damage does not spread and the glass does not crack. If the repair is not performed properly, a line can form that inevitably leads to the glass cracking.
On rear and side windows repair is most often not possible, so it is necessary to replace the glass. The exception is rare cases when these windows are laminated, which only a small number of newer, more expensive cars have (e.g. Audi A8, Mercedes S class, and similar). Repair is generally done only on the front windshield, and that is when the auto glass damage is smaller than 3 cm. If the damage is located directly in front of the steering wheel and exceeds 1 cm in diameter, auto glass replacement is necessary. In addition, repair is not recommended when the damage is located on the edge of the windshield.
As soon as you notice damage to the auto glass, it is very important to protect it as soon as possible from dirt and moisture getting in, which you can do by sticking adhesive tape over the damage. If dust and moisture get into the depth of the damage, it is much harder to draw out the dirt, that is, to successfully carry out the repair.
Once you have protected the damage, the car should be brought to a specialized service in good time. In order to prevent the glass from cracking and the damage from spreading further, it is recommended to do the repair as soon as possible, as soon as you notice even the smallest damage to the auto glass.
Auto glass repair at the Black Glass service takes about 45 min, and at most 1h for more complex damage. The vehicle is safe to drive immediately after the repair.
For experienced technicians, repair is a simple process that consists of cleaning the glass, filling the glass with a special auto glass resin, curing the glass with a UV lamp to restore its strength, and polishing the glass to achieve good optical clarity.
A well-done repair also means aesthetically minimal visibility of the damage, which should be in the range of 5-10% visibility. If the damage is noticeable more than 10%, it significantly affects the aesthetics of the glass, and thus the success of the repair itself. The consequences of a poorly done glass repair include visibility of the damage on the glass, and even cracking of the glass after the repair.
Auto glass repair is possible only once, which is why it is very important to do the repair at a specialized service where you will get a guarantee that the glass will not crack. If the repair is not done well, the glass must be replaced. The installer’s experience and the quality of the materials are of key importance for a successful glass repair. That is why it matters where you have your auto glass repaired
After a repair done at the Black Glass service, you receive a 5-year warranty.
